WEIGHT LOSS IDEAS FROM JIM!

Here's some GREAT ways sent in from Jim Hitpas to sneak fitness in to your busy day:

The Real-Life Way to Lose
Research shows that the little stuff you do all day can add up to big weight loss. Five readers put the theory to the test — with "wow" results
By Lauren A. Greene, Prevention

To lose pounds and keep them off, burning calories is key. Not just at the gym;
being active throughout the day can add up to big weight loss, too. James Levine,
MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, has spent a decade studying the role
that everyday movement, or NEAT (nonexercise activity thermogenesis), plays in
metabolism. His discovery: People who tap their feet, prefer standing to sitting,
and generally move a lot burn up to 350 more calories a day than those who sit
still. That adds up to nearly 37 pounds a year! Prevention fitness expert Chris Freytag has come up with a dozen ways to increase your NEAT level and add short bursts of exercise to your day to amplify your calorie burn.

Do crunches in bed
Get a jump start on flatter abs before your feet even hit the floor, says Freytag. Simply draw your
knees toward your chest 25 to 50 times to rev your energy, tone your belly, and burn 15 to 20 calories.
Add a set at night to double your burn.
BURNS UP TO 20 CALORIES IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES!

Dance while you dress
When tester Lesa Kennedy flipped on her favorite R&B radio station, she burned 55 extra calories as
she got dressed and packed lunch. "The beat inspired me to add shakes and shimmies to my usual
routine. My daughter loved it, and we started our day off in a great mood," she says.
BURNS UP TO 55 CALORIES IN ABOUT AN HOUR

Circle the block
Research shows that the more comfortable your clothes, the more active you'll be throughout the day. Make it a rule to wear shoes comfy enough for a 5-mile walk, and look for ways to add bits of strolling all day long. Lap the grocery store before you pick up your first item, take a 15-minute midday walk, or try tester Elizabeth Lissmann's tip: "At work I take the stairs to use a bathroom on a different floor."
BURNS UP TO 375 CALORIES THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Stand up more
With their jam-packed days, our testers are no strangers to multitasking. But Freytag found that they could boost their metabolism simply by spending more time on their feet. Rather than sitting on a bench while her children played at the park, for example, tester Melissa Fitzgerald walked around the playground area for 15 minutes and melted 50 extra calories. Kennedy torched 120 more calories in an hour by standing during her daughter's dance class. "All the other moms repeatedly offered me a seat," she says. "They couldn't understand why I would want to stand!" BURNS UP TO 200 CALORIES IN ABOUT AN HOUR

Take a comedy break
Research shows that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes (like when watching a funny half-hour sitcom) can burn about 40 calories. It's a small number by itself, says Freytag, but a daily chuckle could add up to a oss of about 4 pounds over a year. That motivated Lissmann to look for humor throughout the day, such as watching comedy sketches on YouTube during a lunch break. Month 2 weigh in..coming up!

Hey All!

How are you all doing with the weight loss? Hope you are staying motivated despite the dip in temps this week.

I can certainly understand if you've fallen off the wagon a bit though...that is completely normal. I have been doing well watching my portions and how many calories I eat...I was very proud of myself this past weekend. I attended a wake which had an elaborate spread of fatty foods, and I ate some, but in small portions. I also...get this....avoided the dessert table! Now, usually, that's the FIRST table I notice, but I just wasn't feeling it this time. Very odd. But it was a good odd. :)

I have had those days though...where I eat out of boredom...going from fridge to cupboard to pantryto freezer to cookie jar to fridge again...searching for God knows what?! I finally give up and go outside and run around with the kids. Which is a good deterrent for me. Does anyone else have these moments?

I believe our next weigh in is May 15th...so, baby steps! My scale says I'm down a couple more pounds but the scale at our weigh in meetings reads higher...so, I hope it reflects the loss. Good luck to ya'll as well! And wish us luck, Jim and I are celebrating our 11th anniversary this weekend up north and will be relishing in rich, delightful food choices...pray we keep our portion control skills!

Keep moving peeps!

Weighing In on My Weight Loss

I'm Angela Isaac. I'm a Marketing Consultant with WCZY/WMMI. I thought I'd weigh in a little as well. I was the girl in Highschool and College that you all probably hated - I was a svelte 115 pounds, I could eat anything I wanted and drink massive amounts of beer and never gain an ounce. I didn't have to do anything to maintain that figure, either. Then I graduated and got into the "real world". At 21 I got a "desk job" and at about 25, my metabolism slowed down. All of a sudden the 115 became 140...150...and I was like...whoa. Now mind you I didn't look bad, but I didn't look like I was in college anymore, either. I hated exercising, I made every excuse in the book not to, and my first husband was less than happy with my weight gain. I wasn't the trophy he married, and long story short, because he was rather a jerk about things - he ruined ANY motivation I may have had to work out, be healthy and be active. I continued to maintain the same weight, and at 30 I went up to about 170. I still wasn't completely happy with myself, but I learned at an early age not to beat myself up, either, so I resigned myself to the fact that this was my body and this was how I was going to look. Now that I look back, maybe I was just making an excuse?
At 32, I met an absolutely wonderful man and we are now married. At 33, we started our family and brought an absolute blessing into the world, our daughter. A year later, I still haven't dropped all the baby weight. I was still actually wearing some of my maternity clothes. I guess just wishing it off doesn't work!! When the Weight Abate challenge came a long, I joined up, thinking just watching what I eat was going to be enough. The first Weigh In was not a happy one. SO...I actually broke down and showed up at Wellness Central. I got on a treadmill and started speed walking. I actually had FUN! I watched the Price is Right and chatted with a gentleman that was on the bike next to me. I went back, and I'm continuing to go back, and after just a week and a half, I'm honestly feeling GREAT. I actually LOOK FORWARD to going to the gym. I'm seeing results, little by little - my pants are fitting a little looser and the scale says I've lost a couple of pounds already. I never in a million years thought I would actually say that I LIKE exercise. I park the car in the furthest parking spot I can find. I take the stairs. I control my portions. I choose fruit and salads for lunch instead of drive thru fast food. And the little things ARE making a difference. My challenge is I'm very impatient. I expect immediate results when I do things. I was so happy to see the number a little lower on the scale the other day at the gym though. I can do this. I AM doing it, and I will CONTINUE to do it!!! I'm blessed to be on a fabulous team of folks who are on this journey with me and provide great motivational support. GO TEAM LIGHT WEIGHTS!

TIPS FROM DEBBIE AND JOHN!!

Hi Everyone !

Well, the weather is beautiful and it's time to get those bikes out, dust
them off, fill the tires with air and RIDE ! Or grab those roller-blades and
hit the pavement . . . . (well, maybe not HIT the pavement!)

John (my better half) found these "Great" recipes on line and I wanted to
share them with you. We all love salads and those delicious dressing that
go along with them, but most dressing are loaded with fat and calories.
Here are a few that have been modified . . . .

Give them a try ( and don't let the soy or tofu stop you from making them.)
SOY is a wonderful addition to your program.

Caesar Dressing
3 garlic cloves (chopped)
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 1/4 cups cubed firm silken tofu (drained)
1/4 cup lemon juice (about 1 lemon)
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Freshly ground pepper to taste

Combine all ingredients together. Blend well. There are only 17 calories
per serving, 1.4 grams protein, 1.6 total carbs and .4 grams of fiber.
This is a BIG difference from your "normal" Caesars dressing calorie count!
(2 tablespoons is a serving)

Creamy Ranch Dressing
1 1/4 cups plain soymilk
12 oz. silken tofu, drained
1 oz. package Ranch Salad Dressing (mix)

Mix the ingredients together and blend well. You have a low-fat, protein-filled
Ranch Dressing. In a 1/4 cup there are only 48 calories, as opposed to regular Ranch
dressing which contains 140 calories in 2 tablespoons or 280 calories in 1/4 cup!

So, give these a try and remember . . . . . .
"It's the little things that count!"
